Sofia and I began creating paintings together in 2009 when she was around four years old—often with help from her friends. Originally, it was more about me setting up a studio and trying to stop her from mixing colors into mud. As the years progressed our work has become an interesting collaboration which maps her developing interests in imagery, as well as my attachment to, and memory of, the childhood process of making.
Our recent work together involves simple narratives that begin with her drawing, and my response with paint, or vice verse. Sofia’s contributions have a mark of honesty and playfulness—prompting responses from me that are less likely without her.
